Okay, this is getting ridiculous

The weather, I mean. I’ve never seen a winter like this before in Wisconsin. December was abnormally warm. January started out warm, then we got hit with this…

Actual real winter!

Now my back yard looks like this…

For weeks now it’s just barely been dipping below freezing at night, and during the day the termperatures have been getting warmer, and warmer, and warmer. For the last few days our high temps have been in the mid-40s. And by the middle of next week it’s supposed to hit the 5os here.

We have flowers starting to come up. The vegetable gardens are going to need to be weeded here pretty soon if this keeps up. The grass is starting to grow.

This is February. In Wisconsin. January and February are our coldest months. We generally get weeks of below zero weather here this time of year.

All of the ski and snowmobile trails are closed and have been closed all season except for that one snowstorm we had. Ice fishing? Forget it. What little ice there is out there on the local lakes is now so rotten they’ve had to resort to using airboats to go out to rescue the few damned fools who’ve tried to venture out on the ice.

The sturgeon spearing season is supposed to start on Lake Winnebago on Feb. 10. Usually there will be about 6,000 ice houses out there and hundreds of trucks and ATVs. This year? If this keeps up it’s entirely possible we won’t have a sturgeon season at all.

  1. Sounds like you are getting some South Mississippi weather…..we are actually getting our average this year for winter…..60s day and 40s night….that is unusual for us down here. Have a great Sunday chuq

    1. Weather this winter has been weird all the way around. Here in the north central part of the country we’ve been sitting in an unusually mild and calm pocket of weather almost all winter long while all the storms have tracked far to the south of us and then rolled up the east coast. Same thing happened last summer, all of the major storms dipped down to the south of us then as well.

  2. And yet, because there was some snow, and some cold, our climate warming deniers will proclaim “there was cold and snow, so much for global warming!”

We had a good dose of winter here for a little over a week. Started with 5.5″ of powder snow, which compacted on the roads, became ice overnight. Then it was drizzled on the next day, pretty much making already slick ice, slicker than snot on a doorknob. How it drizzled I do not know, our temps were hovering just above zero, with wind chills in the below zero, for a good week.

Yesterday and the day before, damn near 70 degrees.

    1. Sounds like your weather has been similar to what we’ve been getting up here, just not as warm as your location. We too had only about one week of winter, then back to the ridiculously warm temps again. I’m seventy years old and I’ve lived her all my life and I’ve never seen a winter this warm before. It’s about 6 AM right now and it’s just below freezing with dense fog. Should hit 40 – 45 today, and by Wednesday it’s supposed be hitting 50+ degrees. In February???

Makes me very nervous about what summer is going to be like. Last year was one of the hottest and driest summers we had in ages. If this trend continues it could be bad.

      1. Usually, here, if it hits 70 degrees in Jan-Feb, it means trouble when the next cold front sweeps through and has all of that gulf moisture to play with. Severe storms/hail/tornados.

Our last few summers have been HOT, and not a lot of rain. I just had issues with my well pump going out, put a new one in, exactly the same depth, and it had no water to pump. (self explanatiory why the old pump quit,) My well is low! Been here 40 years and never had an issue with water. Have even forgot a few times to turn the hose off, till a day and a half later. No issues at all.

And all of a sudden we are low on well water. Had to drop the new pump, only went about 3 feet and bottomed out. Had to bring it up 5-6″ so the submersible pump won’t scrape bottom when it kicks in/out.

We’ve been on heavy water conservation tactics for the last week. I did not button up the well entirely, our well is a 2-footer (wide) and the well cap has a 4″ hole in it to get the pump in/out. There is a rubber “cap” to install there where the pipe comes out, to keep it sealed up so rodents/whatever can’t contaminate the well. I put some hardware cloth there temporarily, so I can easily check my water depth over the next few weeks to see if it will/is recovering. We are hoping for a wet spring.

They have city water out here, but I hate city water. However, nasty ass city water is better than none…

  3. We are experiencing unusually warm weather for this time of the year where I live too…South Western United States — the trees and plants are budding out but I fear that if we have another frost they will all die back and have to start all over again — this has happened before —also I predict that this summer of 2024 is going to be the hottest on record and I expect to see some temperatures in the Central states to reach 110 degrees F in August –and perhaps 130-degrees F in places like Joshua, Texas — this will be the worst wildfire season on record too….and the same with fire, flood and tornado…more intensity than 1913 —those are my prognostications.
