Blizzard Evelyn

IMG_0836That’s what they’re calling it now, Blizzard Evelyn. We’re currently under a full scale blizzard warning and have been since yesterday. The photo doesn’t look very bad right now but we were in a lull in the storm when I took it around 6 AM. So far we’ve had about 12 inches of snow with freezing rain mixed in at times and 40 mph winds. Today they’re predicting as much as 14 inches more on top of what we already have with 50 mph winds.

Here in town it hasn’t been too bad. The buildings and trees help moderate the winds. Out in the countryside the roads are nearly impassible with whiteout conditions in many areas where the visibility is zero.

I heard one news outlet say that we’ve had more snow this April than we had during the entire winter and I suspect that might be true.

Feel sorry for the birds right now. We had a dozen or more wrens, finches, robins and mourning doves sheltering in the corner where the garage attaches to the house trying to get out of the weather.

Ah, spring in Wisconsin.

  1. Someone needs to complain to the weather gods. This is clearly NOT acceptable. I would write a strongly worded email if I were you.
    My deep sympathies on your Spring. It’s sounds horrific. We are all put out because it’s supposed to be “flurries” tomorrow morning. We have a different level of tolerance here in Cincitucky.

    1. It’s been interesting, that’s for sure. We were under blizzard warnings until Sunday morning. I think we got at least 12 – 18 inches of snow here with 50 mph winds. I heard some areas got as much as 20 – 25 inches. Still, it could have been worse. Having it on a weekend helped a lot because traffic was at a minimum. Biggest problem was people trying to drive and getting stuck on the roads so the snowplows couldn’t get through. I really felt sorry for the birds. We had robins, wrens, finches, mourning doves and other birds huddled up in sheltered areas all around the house trying to get out of the storm and looking for something to eat. They emptied out my feeder in the backyard before noon. It’s over now but it will take a while to dig out. All the schools are closed Monday as are a lot of businesses.

        1. at the time this was written we were going through the worst snowstorm in something like 75 years here. I think we ended up with 2 and a half feet of snow at the house and some places had over 3 feet

  2. I’m not that far from you. We got cold and a light dusting of snow, which does not sound too bad until you realize it’s the middle of April and we’re still getting early March weather! It’s 20-30 degrees colder than it’s supposed to be!

    1. Storm totals are in the 30 inch range I’m told. We didn’t get that much here, but my best guess is we got at least 18 – 20. Blizzard warnings started about mid-morning on Saturday and continued until noon on Sunday. Lots of tree damage, roofs caved in. The shelter my neighbor had for his BBQ equipment and garden tractor caved in. Think it destroyed his little tractor but can’t tell yet. Most schools were closed yesterday and some businesses, but it looks like everything is open again today. They’re calling it the worst we’ve had in decades. And just heard we’re supposed to get another 4 inches on Wednesday. Sigh…
